FAQ

How is OneRiot different?

OneRiot is different than other search engines for one super reason: we index our pages based on the current popularity of our search results; they index by looking at the links between different pages. This is why other search engines often wind up with Wikipedia-style info as the top-ranked search results - which is great, useful information, but not necessarily the most real-time info available on that subject. We tend to care about the newest or most popular information more than the archived stuff - just like a lot of you - so we organize our results in that way.

What is this "Pulse" business all about?

When we say "Pulse" we're talking about today's most popular web content. If a website, video or news story is generating a lot of buzz and energy within our community, we consider it "pulsing" (which means it gets to go in our top search results).

How do you find the Pulse?

We find the pulse with the help of millions of users who constantly tell us what they're reading, watching or interacting with. If a bunch of them start consuming the same content at the same time, we consider that content to be "pulsing." This user-driven process will keep a popular search result in the top of our rankings until a new one comes along to take its place.

Hey! What happened to yesterday's pulse?

Because the ranking of our search results depend so heavily on how our users feel about them, a link's ranking within our results tends to shift. So, if you searched for something yesterday, and are finding different results now, don't worry - that's the point. We're showing you the pulse of the web right now.

How do you know what your users are looking at?

Because they show us! It's these people that wind up helping you find the web's best and brightest, just by using a toolbar and going about their normal day-to-day internet activity (anyone can do this - just join up here). You can find more about the toolbars and how they work in our Privacy section.

Why is OneRiot named "OneRiot?"

The internet is a noisy, frantic, opinionated place. When new content emerges, or when standard content becomes popular, the energy around that web page gets really crazy - just like a riot. Our goal is to find and make sense of that information in one place - so, one + riot = OneRiot. Get it?

How many people are contributing to these results?

We currently have just over two million users, and we're growing every day!

Am I contributing?

If you've downloaded one of our toolbars, and opted into our program, you are - but if you haven't, then sorry, not yet. However, we'd really love for you to start influencing our search results, so get on it here.

How do I contribute?

All you need to do to start helping us find the pulse is download a toolbar, and keep it turned on as you're going about the web. Easy-peasy.

How long has this company been around?

OneRiot launched on November 11, 2008, (and we prefer chocolate birthday cake, thanks).

What is the "PulseChecker?"

The PulseChecker is the name of our original toolbar. You should use it.

What browser(s) is your Myspace Toolbar compatible with?

Internet Explorer and Firefox.

How often are the "hot topics" on the homepage updated?

As often as they change.

What is "Satisfaction?"

Peanut butter and banana sandwiches!
Oh... Satisfaction! Satisfaction is an awesome service that spits your question out to a bunch of people who KNOW STUFF. Try it, it's neato.

How long does it typically take to get a response on Satisfaction?

It varies, but normally not long at all. If you're getting antsy you can always email us - we love it when we get mail (and we answer really fast).
